SC Hurricane Common Rail Diesel Engine Management System
Modern common rail diesel engines are very complex and their engine management systems are critical for the engine to operate. Without the engine control unit (ECU) a common rail diesel engine will not start and run. The technology is very different to that of gasoline engines. The fuel pressure in the diesel common rail ranges from 200 to 1600 Bar, varying dynamically as the engine speed and load changes, supplied by an engine mounted electronically control mechanical pump. This compares to just 3 Bar for a typical gasoline engine from its electric pump. Fuel injection timing and quantity is critical in the diesel with up to 5 separate injection events per cylinder per cycle. Each of these injections must be individually timed to less than ¼ crankshaft degree. To enable this precise control, the injectors are driven with up to 100 Volts and 20 Amps.
The ECU in a mass production common rail diesel vehicle is inexorably linked with many other modules in the car. These modules communicate with each other on several networks, to share information from various sensors around the engine, transmission, chassis and cabin. Without these other modules, the ECU will not function. The resulting situation is that it is virtually impossible to take a common rail diesel out of a production vehicle and use it in another application.
That is until now, as Specialist Components launch their unique Hurricane stand-alone programmable common rail diesel engine management system. The Hurricane system (consisting of the SC Typhoon ECU and an external SC Injector Driver Module) enables simple installation of common rail engines. A PC can be connected to the Hurricane system via SC's bespoke USB interface and software, enabling easy visual diagnostics of all the engine sensors and actuators.
Like all SC products, the Hurricane system has been 100% developed and designed by SC's engineers at their base in Norfolk, UK. It is available to purchase directly from SC, or together with a new Ford common rail diesel engine from Power Torque Engineering Ltd.
